I just updated to Catalina yesterday. I wake up to do some work on my MacBook and find I have 39 GB less of storage on my machine. When I check the storage, the 39 GB is in the "untouchable" section listed as "other" underneath the system files in my file manager.
I recall the same thing happening with a previous OS update but I cannot recall how I deleted these files.
How can I get rid of this "other" storage?

Try something likeOmniDiskSweeper for a GUI to get a good look at itemized file size and location:

The interesting thing is, this was not here until I did the Catalina update, and if I remove the data amount in "other" it is almost exactly what I had on my machine before the update.
This tells me it is more than likely unnecessary files from the update, almost like backups or duplicates.
I will try the OmniDiskSweeper but I am not sure it is going to tell me exactly what is in the "other" classification since there is no simple way to access that sectioning of files.
alternatively from the Terminal.app, more detail copy and paste the command line:
File size, and finding missing GB— list the items in the home folder with the sizes, including invisible items.
sudo du -h -d 1 ~/

I accidentally hit the solved tab but my issue is not even remotely solved.
I have yet to find an answer as to what is in the other folder designation and how I can delete the excess 39 GB od data that was dropped on my MacBook after updating to Catalina.
Other storage is a category that may be comprised of old installers in your Downloads folder, movies, music, etc. Start there.
