Lost iPhone lead to loss of all photos

I recently lost my iPhone and along with that majority of my photos. Prior to the loss my phone and laptop were in sync so all my photos were on both devices but not I am missing a lot of my photos. I had the iCloud setting for photos on because certain occasions had their photos saved on my iCloud but the rest have disappeared from my laptop. Is there anyway to retrieve the photos? Its really upsetting, there were 5000 photos missing :/

There is more than one iCloud related option for photos so it isn't clear what setting you had turned on, but if it was the iCloud Photos option, you may want to use your computer internet browser and log into icloud.com and go to the Photos app there and see if the photos are there.
