Recovering Old Photos from Broken Phone

A year ago I dropped my iPhone 5 down the stairs and destroyed it. The screen semi popped out, I couldn't turn it on, and there were broken parts jingling inside. I got a new iPhone 6s and we changed providers to T-Mobile. Nothing I had on my old phone was transferred over, it was a blank phone. So now a year later I realized I didn't backup the photos I had at the time to my desktop. Is there any way to retrieve old data, specifically the photos, from my broken phone without using iCloud (I don't think I saved anything to it).

iPhone 5, iOS 10

Not if you did not sync them to iCloud or back them up using iTunes or iCloud.
