How do I connect my Canon hf r70 to my macbook pro (2014) to be used as a webcam?

Dear Friends,

I am baffled as to why my MacBook Pro does not recognize or even acknowledges my Canon hf r70 camcorder when I plug it into the USB port. I want to use it in my Zoom, Teams, and other video conferencing platforms. What am I missing? Is there software I need to download, or an adapter I need to plug in first, or is it possible at all?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

The USB connection on the Canon camera is used to transfer still images and video files from the cameras internal storage to either an external drive or to a computer. The USB will not carry live video from the camera to the Mac.

To send live video from the camera to the Mac you will need a video capture device, see this youtube video for a description:

You have two Options:

1 - use the built in iSight camera on the MacBook, - no additional purchases required, cost is free

2 - buy a video capture device. video capture device, cost from $150
