When i try to import photos from my iphone 6 to my mac, my mac says as i have no photos on my phone and so does image capture. I've tried updating both devices but i still have this problem.

Is by any chance iCloud Photos enabled on your iPhone, and "Optimise iPhone Storage"? If the photos are stored in icloud and only optimised versions are on the iPhone, you cannot download them directly from the ipHone but have to download them from iCloud.
