Why can't I use songs from Apple Music in iMovie?

Apple Music cannot be used in iMovie because the songs are DRM protected. Also, Apple Music is a subscription streaming service and therefore access to the songs depends on keeping up the subscription. So, you can’t put a streaming service song into a project because if you cancelled the subscription the access to the song would disappear. Your right is to listen to the song, not use it elsewhere.
However, you can still purchase a song from iTunes and use that song in iMovie.

Apparently, even if you purchase songs or albums, even when they are public domain music and words, not all of them can be used in iMovie or Keynote.
True. The songs would need to be in a compatible format and properly licensed. “Happy Birthday to You” is copyrighted.

have an individual Apple Music subscription. However, I am prevented from importing a song that I have downloaded into iMovie. Where am I supposed to get music to use in iMovie?
