Can only split video in specific locations

I'm sure this will be easy to answer. I want to make a music video for my song using clips from a bunch of different sources. I'm trying to add all the clips I want to use into iMovie, and then I'll move them around to the right part of the song.

I can't seem to split video files when the part of the video in question extends past the song (the option is grey). I copied the song a few times so that it appeared underneath, but now that I try to split the video in that place it splits the song audio below, and not the video.

I then moved the audio further to the right, thinking maybe it would continue to allow the split function but without splitting the audio, but the function actually disappears again, as you can see in the screen shot.

Select the video clip by clicking on it to make it outlined in yellow. Place your playhead where you want to make the split. Do Modify/Split Clip from the main menu at the top of your screen.

An easier work flow would be to create a new iMovie project. Then place a black background into the timeline and set the duration of the black background to a little more than the duration of your song. (You can just drag out the right edge of the black background.) Place your video clips above the black background where you can split them per the above procedure and move the segements around freely. You cannot add transitions to clips placed in the upper timeline, but when you move your cursor over them little fade handles will appear in the upper corners of the clip that can be moved individually by holding down the Option key as you press down with your cursor and slide the handle. That way you can create fade-ins and fade-outs if you want.
