On screen iPad keyboard is grayed out on home screen. Is there a fix?

Occasionally, the onscreen keyboard turns gray and becomes unusable on the home screen. However, the onscreen keyboard still works within apps. I have to restart my iPad for it to work again on the home screen. Yet the problem eventually returns.

I mailed it in for service but support said they couldn’t reproduce the issue. Does anybody have a solution for this problem?
