Pages app./ How to change the color of document background

Hello again,

Now that I have the Pages app I can't figure out how to use it. I'm just trying to change the background of a document to a color. I click on Create New Document but when I click on a color nothing happens.

Am I able to get the background color to appear first and then type text over it? I am able to change the text color but not the background. I've tried to find the answer to this question here and elsewhere and I don't seem to have the same buttons to click that they're saying to. I just upgraded to mac Catalina 10.15.5 on macBook Pro.

Thanks so much,

Susan

For the background color, you need to be in the Document settings for a word processing documents (for a page layout document the settings are in the Format tab).

So, in a word processing document click the Document tab at the top of the sidebar. Click the Section tab (brought back in 10.1, thankfully) and then choose the color you want for your background (you can also click the disclosure triangle next to Background for more options). I hope this is what you’re after.

If you have a page layout style document, however, follow VikingOSX’s instructions.

Pages 10.1 supports word processing and layout style documents. The only means to change the background color of a word processing document is to select the black background, basic template, or insert a page size shape, set its background color to your preferred color, and then from the Arrange menu : Section Masters : Move Object to Section Masters. This latter approach is a kludge.

If you want a Layout style document, you can open a basic word processing template, and from the Document panel, uncheck Document body. This will pose a warning dialog that you are about to whack (convert) the contents of the current word processing document. Once this is done, your will discover a Background color selection well on the Format panel. Layout documents have no document flow as does a word processing document, and it is all about arranging Text boxes, Shapes, Images on the page. There is Text box linking to permit flow from one Text box to another, which is also present in the word processing mode.
