MacBook pro refusing to Acknowledge LaCie Mobile Drive

I have a 16" Macbook Pro (2019). From the Apple Store I purchased a LaCie 2TB mobile drive. It arrived one hour ago. Every time I plug it in, a message pops up on my screen telling me the drive isn't readable -- and in fact it never shows up in Finder. I've tried using different ports, different cables, praying -- but the computer still won't acknowledge the drive has been plugged in. For its part, the little light on the drive comes on and the drive itself vibrates as if working.

Is this a problem with my Mac (a setting I need to change, for example) or with the LaCie mobile drive?

Launch Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, select the drive (the top level, not the volume) and Erase it. Format as GUID / APFS.
