my desktop picture has disappeared and when I go into system preferences and click on desktop the whole pane is blank, there is nothing there and nothing to click on...does anyone have any info or experience with this issue?

Does anyone know how/why my desktop picture would disappear and now when I go into system preferences and click on desktop the whole pane is blank and there in nothing to click on to alter my desktop picture. I have tried restarting my computer and putting it down and turning it back on, none of that worked...Please help

Boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down and try to reset the desktop picture from there. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
