Audio scrubbing in keynote

I have a class where I download .pptx slideshows with lecture audio embedded in the slide. Is there a way to see the playback of the audio and scrub through? With videos, there is a bar at the bottom of the player that indicates how much of the video has played, and you can adjust the playhead to jump to different spots in the video. Is there a way to do this with audio in keynote? I've tried to resize the audio icon, but there are no controls that allow me to change the size of the icon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sound files placed on a slide are unable to display the play control.

The only workaround I know of is to create a video file using the sound file and a PNG still image:

  • bring the two files together in iMovie and export as a video file - this takes seconds to do
  • place the video file on the slide and reduce the size to as small as it will go, to hide video from viewers
  • play the presentation then move the pointer over the video file to reveal the play control

MacOS 10.7 (Lion) - 10.13 (High Sierra)

Use Apache OpenOffice instead of Keynote - https://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/

Mojave is not supported yet as of this writing.

MacOS 10.14 (Mojave)

  1. Right-click on the file and select Rename, then change the extension to .zip
  2. Use an app called "The Unarchiver" (free on the app store) to unzip the file, which will create a folder containing the contents of the powerpoint
  3. Inside the folder at ppt/media there will be several .m4a audio files that contain the lecture audio
