I don’t think anyone here will have an answer for you.


We could speculate that the cost of the M1 chip is less than the Intel CPU + other bits needed . . . But again, I doubt that Apple is willing to release their manufacturing costs/bill of materials for the M1 versus the Intel.

Apple has not said, however, as a guess, probably because the manufacturing process for Apple's M1 is cheaper than paying Intel for their chips, so Apple can reduce the costs of the devices that use them.


Also do note the specs. The new M1 Macbook Pros start at 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage while the Intel MacBook Pros start at 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

And the M1 MBPs are only available with 2 TB3 ports, whereas the Intel MBPs that are still 'current' are the 4 TB3 port versions. I take that to mean that the new M1 MBPs are 'lower end', which makes sense since it seems to be the same M1 chip that's used in the MacBook Air and Mac Mini, neither of which are really 'Pro' machines.
