my Mac book is running Catalina 10.15.7 ive been trying to back up using time machine bt it keeps failing about half way through theres almost a TB of date on laptop, ive tried 2 different 2 TB hardrives but results are the same
MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13
tried two harddrives and different cables but it now seems to be sorted , MacBook had software issue that it seemed to be that it was performing as encrypted when it wasn't so it was failing during back up , the classic turn on the encryption and then back off seems to have solved it

Typically a failure like this would indicate a bad TM drive/enclosure/cable
