Separate Libraries on Apple Music with Family Sharing

Hi to all!!

I've been trying to figure this out for... well, a while. My mom has a Family Sharing plan that includes me, my dad, and my sister. Today we upgraded to Apple One. The only problem I have doesn't seem to have a solution—me and my sister would really like to have separate libraries and playlists on Apple Music instead of everything being completely shared with those in the family plan. I don't really understand why we can't have separate accounts with Apple Music while being a part of Family Sharing; shouldn't it just pay for the subscription on all of our accounts? I tried logging out of Media & Purchases (it was logged into my mom's iCloud account) but when I logged in with my iCloud email and went to Music, it said I needed a subscription even though my iCloud is a part of the Family Sharing plan. In my settings my Apple ID is, in fact, my own, but on Music it will only work with my mom's login. Sorry for this long post and I hope it makes sense... this is pretty frustrating since you would think this would be easy to fix.

I hope everyone has been doing well and please, stay safe! <3

Hey there, vivianiris.

We understand that you want your own Apple Music library, but when you sign in with your own Apple ID, you are being prompted to buy a subscription. You can only listen to Apple Music when signed in with your Mom's Apple ID.

As long as your own Apple ID is signed in, you should have your own Apple Music library with an active Apple Music subscription. Let's ensure that Family Sharing is set up right to where you can sign into your own Apple ID and have your own library. The family organizer for your Family Sharing group will want make sure that Apple Music is showing as shared in Settings > [tap your name] > Family Sharing > Shared with your family section > Apple Music. Here is more information about that from this article: What is Family Sharing?

"Share subscriptions with everyone in your family

Sharing access to Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud storage, and other Apple services is easy. You can manage your Family Sharing subscriptions in Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing.

Share music, games, and more

With Family Sharing, you can share subscriptions for Apple MusicApple ArcadeApple News+, and Apple TV+—all without sharing each other's accounts. The family organizer can invite a family member to share a subscription in Messages. Just tap "Invite via Messages," enter the family member's name or phone number, and tap Send. The recipient can accept the invite by viewing the invitation and then tapping "Join Family."

If that subscription isn't being shared, you would need to separately purchase the subscription with your own Apple ID. Let us know if that helps.

Take care!
