Sudden shut-down - iPhone 6S Plus

My iPhone 6S Plus has recently begun to switch off unexpectedly, even though it has been charged.

Symptoms:

Battery level reading might be showing 39% or 51% or 89%, but suddenly the phone will shut down. There might be a few seconds warning (e.g. swipe gesture fails to respond, web pages slow to load). After charging for 2-3 minutes, the phone can be switched on and the battery level shows 8-10%, so either the battery level software is ‘wrong’ or the battery is dying.

Settings:

The Battery Health shows as 100% capacity, with Normal peak performance.

The phone is set to Optimised Charging.

Running iOS 14.3 (although issues were there before this upgrade).

I have tried the following remedies:

  1. Repeated Charge/Discharge cycles (to 100%, with phone OFF. Then play radio station, until down to 1%).
  2. Hard reset
  3. Factory reset

It will play the radio for >10 hrs. But if another app is used, the phone shuts down immediately.

Any suggestions about this issue?

What are my options?

Agreed that something is not correct. From your details, I suspect that this may be a hardware issue. You mentioned that this behavior existed before the update as well. I still believe that it is the battery. It may be a charge reporting issue as well. We will not know for sure with software troubleshooting. I recommend that you have your iPhone examined at the Apple Store or at an Authorized Service Center. If they are closed then contact ➔ Apple Support
