double click not using default set application, Big Sur

I have MS Office apps set to open their default file extensions, but when I double click on a file it opens using the Apple equiv. (Pages for Word, Numbers for Excel and Keynote for Ppt). In Outlook it is only tied to the Apple apps. "Open With" shows the default as the MS application.

I have set the default apps in all ways that I have found possible, but no luck to change the double click on file or attachment in Outlook. I have to right click open with in Finder to open these files

Any suggestions?

Maybe you already did that but just to be thorough:

select one Word doc (say) in the Finder, press Command-I.

What does it say under “Pen with”?

If it says “Word”, try changing to something else, then back; if it says something else, like Pages, change it to Word.

Then click “Change All”.

Does it fix things?

If it does, repeat for the other apps documents.

If the problem persists, look up how “reset launch services database”.
