Numbers, Pages, Keynote Update

I have a iMac running High Sierra and a MacBook Pro running Sierra. Every time I open these apps I get a message a later version is available, but no updates show in purchased. If I go to purchased in the App store it shows a very old date and just Open. If I click the title of the App it takes me to the update page, I click update and get "Download an older version of AppName" I click download and I get spinning wheel and then nothing. The attached file shows screen shots of Pages app on iMac and my Purchased screen. I have exactly the same problem on MacBook Pro. The versions I have:

  • iMac (Mid 2010, 21.5") OS 10.13.6, Pages 5.6.2, Numbers 3.6.2, Keynote 6.6.2
  • Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 13") OS 10.12.6 Pages 7.1, Numbers 5.1, Keynote 8.1

I am having issues because my iPad and iPhone are on IOS 14 and anything created and stored in iCloud can't be open on Macs.

Only Pages v7.3 thru v8.1 were intended for use with macOS High Sierra, so it cannot find Pages v7.3 installed to update it to v8.1. That is likely why it is stalling on you. Pages v5.6.2 was the last version for El Capitan 10.11.6.

On your mid-2012 MBP with Sierra, the last version of Pages was v7.2, and it should update you to v7.2 from v7.1. If it can still find the application download from Apple's servers.

Pages documents created on iOS/iPadOS 14 (v10.3.9), iCloud, or macOS (v10.3.9) can be opened all the way back to Pages v5.6, with two caveats:

  1. Not using features unique to current application versions
  2. Your hardware is not unsupported (e.g. on Apple's vintage/obsolete product list).

Your mid-2010 iMac and mid-2012 MBP are both on the unsupported product list for current versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, and that will take priority over any version of these Apple applications that you have. It may also have something to do about the Mac App Store not updating these versions for you, as it would be pointless on unsupported hardware.

I believe I have fixed this. I found this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8504642?answerId=33782877022#33782877022 The first part of the instructions "Reset in App store" was not available. I went to Application/Numbers>show package contents and dragged "-MASReceipt" folder to Trash. I went through the same process as earlier Purchased in App store click on the Numbers title, click install, the pop up menu appears and this time the download worked. I now have Numbers v6.1 and it appears to work. I now need to try on the other Apple apps and then the MBP.

Thank you this is helpful. I have tried on MBP to update from Pages 7.1 to 7.2 but I get the same behaviour as with all the Apple App updates. The popup "Download an older version of Pages?" I click Download, it spins as if it is downloading for about 30 seconds then comes back up with the same message but with wheel still spinning. What is frustrating is that it is telling me there is a later version compatible with my OS but it is just not doing it. Is there a way of finding out whether updates have ever been downloaded since the original purchase date shown in Purchased?

I spoke too soon. The other apps didn't update immediately. Updated method: drag"-MASReceipt" to trash. Close App store, wait a short while reopen Appstore. In Purchased, if the App shows as Update it will go into the loop of "Download older version", if it shows as install it will then give the same message but click download and it updates the App and creates a new "-MASReceipt" and shows as installed. If it doesn't show as install trying closing Appstore and re-opening or even a reboot. After closing and re-opening App Store the apps will show as Update but they are already updated to the latest versions. I can live with this.
