How do I enter the code on my Apple TV when I can’t get to the settings function on the tv since I don’t have the remote that enables me to do that? I’m obviously missing something.

How do I get to the settings icon on my tv to set up iPhone operation of my Apple TV when I’m only using my iPhone in the first place because I lost the remote provided with the Apple TV. Seems not to make sense. You go to your phone to set up phone remote and then get a 4 digit code you’re supposed to be entering in the settings function of your Apple TV. But if I could get to the settings function, I wouldn’t need to set up the phone remote in the first place. What am I missing?
