Can’t scan

I can print from my Mac book pro to my cannon picks 5420 printer but I can’t scan.

I am running Big Sur and AirPrint

I keep getting the message that I need to scan to a pc, connected to the network with a USB cable

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.4

The Canon MB5420 and MG5420 are supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint, but only if networked, and not connected via USB. If you are printing via USB, then you at some point installed the Canon drivers for this device. Apple's built-in AirPrint should support scanning via Image Capture or Preview as previously stated.

Also as mentioned, the VueScan Professional software supports both of these Canon devices without any Canon software, or Apple AirPrint required.

What app are you trying to scan with?

Have you tried using Preview or Image Capture to scan?

What does the Canon MB5420 manual say about wireless operation, particularly wireless scanning?

Have you installed or run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on your Mac?

Lastly, download and try the demo version of VueScan to see if it can scan wirelessly.
