How can I prevent my iPhone from being blacklisted?

I recently purchased a used iPhone. The seller provided me the imei and it was clean. I was able to activate it no problem and so far so good.

But now I’m reading that a seller can potentially report the phone lost or stolen anytime and it could be blacklisted.

is there any way to prevent that from happening? Or do I just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best?
