iMac won't turn on

I have a mid-2011 iMac which was showing vertical lines all across the screen. The only way to move beyond it was to press and hold the power button. Now, with a normal press on the power button (after waiting a minute or so), it won't start: black screen, no opening "bong" or other noises or lights. Also tried disconnecting from power altogether (pulled the plug) and it still won't start. Suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

That sounds like several hardware issues. Since Apple won't repair your Mac because it's obsolete, as classified by Apple, unfortunately, my advice to you is to look at a new Mac.
