My wife's new M1 MacBook Air (MacOS 11.5.2) is suddenly having an issue finding files on the desktop. From Safari or Firefox if she tries to attach a photo stored on the desktop the message comes up that "Desktop can't be opened because the original can't be found". This started recently but no changes have been made. I did do a fresh install of Big Sur but it didn't help. What will fix this?

Clicking on the icon for Desktop brings the same 'not found' as I posted originally. And to clarify, I shut down, held the power button and selected the recovery partition, selected Install fresh copy of Big Sur, thinking that would solve the issue.
I called Apple Support. In Finder Prefs, I removed Desktop then added it back in. Works!
Screenshot the Finder Sidebar, I think the file icon Desktop means it's corrupted.
Are you using the Root User? Root User didn't include Desktop.
