State of latest airprint Brother drivers for Big Sur

I have a 2017 iMac and a 2020 MacBook Air, both accessing a Brother MRC-9340CDW over my home network via AirPrint. The iMac gives me the option to scan when I look at it via System Preferences; the Air does not.

Looking at System Information, I see that the iMac's printer driver version is 2.0 and Scanning support is "Yes". On the Air, version 3.0, scanning support "No".

I've seen reference to the Brother iPrint&Scan app available in the App Store. Is this the way it has to be done now? Does anyone here know if scan support was removed from the AirPrint driver on purpose? (yes, I'll ask Brother also, but their site seems to be having some issues right now).

Thanks for any clues.

AirPrint has never had any scanner support. It is solely a print driver.

The built-in scanner interface is called Image Capture Architecture (ICA). I don't know if it can be built into the device, but the ICA software can usually be found on the manufacturers website--sometimes specifically named, and sometimes just generically as some form of scanner software (as you found on the Brother website).

I forgot to note that I also loaded the latest printer and scanner drivers from Brother (which then gave me the scan option in System Preferences) but I ended up in the situation described here:

The solution at the Apple link above solves THAT problem. Not having a scan button is solved by downloaded the Brother drivers.
