I have an old iPhoto library stored on a hard drive that I want to add to my main library, but although I have no trouble opening it from my desktop, I get an error message when I try to add it to iPhotos. It tells me to connect the side that's already connected. I suspect I need to update the older library. How?
Please read the following user tip and restate your question/problem in detail:

What system and Photo versions are you running?
What app created the library on the external HD: iPhoto or Photos?
How is the EHD formatted?
You want to add the photos in the EHD library to your working library in your Pictures folder, right?
You currently cannot add one library to another - that doesn't work.
If you want to merge libraries, you either need to use the paid app Powerphotos (from fatcat) or wait for Monterey - which should be able to do it.
Thanks for the how-to-write-a-question info. Good to know. I’m running the newest OS (I update all the time). The photos on the external HD were created in iPhoto. I’m not sure how it’s formatted. How can I tell? I want to add the photos on the external HD to my Photos library. Thanks!
Control (right) - click on the EHD's icon on the Desktop and select "Get Info" from the contextual menu. The Info pane will show the format of the drive.
So you're running Photos V6.0 and macOS 11.6, right?
