Contact Microsoft for a New Key:

What was on there previously? Starting with macOS Catalina, 64-bit, is all that is allowed to be installed for application versions. So, if you had 32-bit version installed, then you need to 64-bit version. You'd uninstall it (using Microsoft's uninstallater), and then reinstall it. Contact Microsoft for a 64-bit key.

Start Here:  Microsoft Contact Us Virtual Agent - Microsoft Support. Perform a chat session with Microsoft using a computer, as it would be more user-friendly doing so.

You will need Microsoft Office 2016 (now deprecated), Office 2019 (current), Office 2021 (upcoming), or an Office 365 subscription, or you will want to migrate to LibreOffice (free), or can migrate to Apple iWork Pages, Numbers, and Keynote (free) and which can read and write many Office documents.

If you have Microsoft Office 2019 or Office 365 installed, and it’s not working, contact Microsoft Support for assistance.

If you have been preserving an Office 2011 or earlier install, that software has become incompatible with more recent macOS releases including Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey. That older Office software does still work on older macOS releases, Mojave and earlier. But these older apps do not work with current versions, as Apple has finished most of fifteen years’ work to retire these older and problematic interfaces.

Microsoft Office documents are still present and available, and can be imported into newer Office versions, and into LibreOffice, and often into the iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

High Sierra also doesn't any more I would like to know why

Microsoft ceased support for older macOS releases.

They are supporting the three most recent macOS versions.

Why the three most recent? Usually because supporting the older software on older older versions cost the vendors more, and for a diminishing number of users.

If your Mac can be upgraded, upgrade it.

If your Mac cannot be upgraded, LibreOffice can help you get a few more years.

If you’re not sure if your Mac can be upgraded, post both the Mac model and the Mac model year. The model and model year together determine the available macOS upgrades. With both model and year, somebody here can determine which macOS upgrades are available, if any. (The macOS upgrades are free.)
