iPad Mini 6 - Screen Pressure Distortion

Recently purchased an iPad Mini 6.

I notice that when I apply a bit of pressure to the screen I can see distortion spots (sometimes near the pressure point, sometimes a bit away).

It's especially noticeable when drawing with the Apple pencil (where applying pressure when writing/drawing is more natural vs. just interacting normally via touch).

Is this expected, or might I have a defective unit?

All newer iPads with laminated screens experience this issue to varying degrees.

My over 6-year old, 2015/2016, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro exhibits this behaviour if the screen is pressed down too hard, with or without an Pencil/third party stylus.

This issue is NOT isolated to just the new 2021 iPad Mini.

This is a common issue with varying degrees of noticeability/severity.

If you are pressing on the iPad's screen hard enough to see color ring distortions, you are applying too much pressure to the iPad’s screen.

You do not need to apply that much pressure to the iPad's screen.

Also, do not need to use that much pressure using an Pencil.

What you are experiencing/seeing is normal and expected.

Try pressing the screen and using your Pencil with less pressure.

Best of Luck to You!

I also have this issue with my mini 6 — pressing on the display near the top or bottom in portrait orientation produces discoloration and distortion on screen areas far away from the pressure point. Based on a long thread on Reddit, and people’s experience with demo units at Apple Stores, this is a very common issue. However, it is not universal among users, suggesting it is a quality control or design problem. For now Apple “geniuses” are sticking to the “this is normal” mantra. I have a week to return mine, but it seems unlikely for now that a replacement will any better. Hopefully Apple will do the right thing and replace these in the long term and/or have a recall when the issue is confirmed.

I’ve owned half a dozen iPad models, and many LCD iPhones. This problem is a completely different LCD pressure issue, which is indeed unique to the iPad mini 6. I can very lightly push anywhere on the display and the focused pressure points that react are nowhere near my finger — all are along the top and bottom edge in portrait orientation. It suggests that the underlying hardware (speakers, buttons, camera, screws, etc.) are pressing against the screen more than they should.

Apple is now replacing my iPad mini 6 due to this issue, but I suspect the replacement could have the same problem since all of the demo mini 6 models in the Apple Store had the same issue (NONE of the other iPad models did), and because many people’s mini 6 replacements still have the problem. This will likely remain unsolved until Apple either revises the design/production slightly or a new mini 7 is released.

If anyone is considering an iPad mini 6 purchase, definitely handle one in-person first to make your decision about the screen quality and how it might affect your use.
