USB-a to Lightning not working

Is there any reason my iPhone would charge using a USB-c to lightning cable but not a USB-a to lightning cable? I've brought two new Apple USB-a to lightning cables, and neither will charge my iPhone the USB-c does just fine. Unfortunately, the plugin for my car is for USB-a, so I can't get it to charge there.
