Where are you entering the password exactly? If you went to Settings->Account(top of settings)->Find My->Find My iPad->Find My iPad (again) and turned off the switch, this does not erase the device. It only turns off Find My.

If you want to completely erase it, after turning it off, go to Settings->General->Transfer or Reset iPad->Erase all Content & Settings.
