No, it does bot. You can have multiple occurrences of a photo in the library and it will not take up additional space on the hard drive. The multiple occurrences are just pointers to the original version.

It doesn't place them there, so they cannot be moved out. These media types are not places, just categorisations. It automatically present certain kinds of images together - like selfies - as a handy shortcut for you. If you don't want the short cut just ignore it. But nothing is moved, just categorised.

You can categorise your images any way you like and are happy to devise. Nothing is stopping you doing that. If the media types category is of no interest, then ignore it. But you can't remove it or change it. It's built-in. When you opt for a giveaway app to manage your images then you get less choices than if you pay for a more powerful app - where in many cases 'more powerful' basically means more choices. Photos is for folks who like this work automated a lot.

But again, there are no duplicates involved. These are albums. Images can be in hundreds of albums and involve no duplication or extra space being used.

Those albums are fixed and embedded in photos.

As Yer_man says - the only option is to ignore them. They cannot be removed. There is no disadvantage to having them except for taking one line in the side bar once media types category is collapsed - so just collapse it and move on.

You can close the the section “media Types”, so you do not see it any longer, only the section title. But you may need to use some of the albums there, because you cannot create some of the smart albums there on your own. For example, the Selfie album is an album where you can find all photos taken with the front camera on any of your iPhones or iPads. The Panoramic album is collecting all photos with an extreme aspect ratio. “Media Types” is the only place where you can search easily for some media types, as the rules in the smart albums are limited.

But you don't have to understand, you just don't have to use it. I know quite a few people who can't be bothered naming people in the Photos, and so ignore the People feature. Just remember the app is designed for whatever the developers believe, or their research leads them to believe, the aggregate of users might want. We don't all fit the aggregate. That's why I use an entirely different application.
