Mac Air not updating ...My mac air is not updating but constantly asking to updating, shutting down and ultimately back in the same spot as before

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the update will install. If this works, then you likely have some third party software installed that is interfering with the normal operation of macOS typically anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software.
