Logging out of Apple ID and logging in to ICloud

Using Big Sur on MaC, I contantly get an error message on trying to log out of Apple ID- there was a problem with the servers or some other nonsense.

I use an Iphone and Apple ID and I Cloud work perfectly on it. I tried safe mode - and same problem. I just want to log out and in so that I can get I Cloud working on the mac. Massive frustration.
