HELP! I do not receive emails or notifications on my iPhone 13 Pro Max unless I open the app and refresh

I have a new iPhone 13 Pro Max. When I first got the phone and received emails, I would get a alert and notification sound before I opened the app. Now, after 1 week of use, I do not get emails or alerts unless I open the app first then refresh. Kind of takes away the reason to have alerts and notifications. What can I do to solve this problem? I have tried deleting the app and reinstalling it but that did not fix the problem. This is my first iPhone (was a Android user prior to this).

Go to Settings>Mail>Accounts>select Fetch New Data. From there, select the mail account you are not receiving mail from. Select Fetch or Manual. Manual means that it will only get mail when you open the app. If you select Fetch, then at the bottom of the screen under Fetch, select a time setting, between 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or hourly. Do not select Manually or Automatically. You can only select Push for iCloud or an Exchange account.
