MacBook Pro 15 (2019) External display refresh rate

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro 15 (2019) and I have plugged in an external monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution. The monitor supports up to 175hz but when I select refresh rate in macOS then the refresh rate is only shown as 60hz. However, if I turn the resolution down to 1080p then I can at least select 120hz, which makes me suspect that this maybe is an issue with the cable I'm using, or my MacBook does not support outputting 1440p higher than 60hz. Looking at this support page it should at least support two screens with a resolution of 5120 × 2880 at 60hz, so data wise it should be able to 1440p at 120hz right? Or I'm I missing something here? Maybe the USB-C to HDMI does not support this resolution?

Using an advanced 8K cable does not change the fact that the

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

tops out at "4K" at 60 hz, maximum.

look under "Resolution" to find your REAL resolution, not "User-Interface looks like" resolutions, which applies only to scaled text..

HDMI cables are bandwidth limited because they chose 5 volts signal levels and to use three conductors plus master clock signal. They simply can't switch fast enough.

If you can move to DisplayPort family (or its encapsulation inside USB-C or ThunderBolt) you have more likelihood of running at higher refresh rates, but no guarantees.
