How to disable Activation Lock if the device does not appear in my Devices List

Hello everyone,

I have a MacBook that I was using during the last two years. I took it to Apple repair, and while they were doing repairs, they told me that Activation Lock is activated, and they cannot proceed until I disable it.

However, Activation Lock was disabled, the technician actually checked that with me when I handed them my Macbook.

So, when they called, they asked me to go to iCloud.com/find to disable Activation Lock, but the Macbook does not appear in the list of my devices (it only appears in settings).

Is there something I am missing here?

Thanks,

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

Did you purchase this device new?

otherwise I suspect you have an issue beyond your control.

I did purchase it used, from a company. While I don't have an Apple purchase receipt, I have proof that the Macbook is mine. There is my iCloud on it, I have the ability to activate deactivate Activation Lock. The problem is on the Apple repair side, they have no problem taking it to repair (it says Activation Lock is deactivated), but when they finalize the repair, they say Activation Lock is activated, which is not the case, powering on the Macbook it shows deactivated. The problem is certainly on Apple Repair side.

It's not because I bought the device used that I lost every advantage of being an Apple user. Let's assume I lost the receipt? Let's assume it was given to me as a gift. Do I lose every bit of right to my Macbook?

Are you stating that unless I have a proof of purchase, I am doomed and no longer a "real" Apple user?

Proof of ownership with Apple products is a bit different compared to other vendors & products. Firmware passwords and Activation Locks are security features so it is imperative that Apple is able to confirm ownership. If your laptop was lost or stolen, you would not want Apple to remove these features if someone brought the laptop to an Apple Store or an AASP would you? So proof of ownership is very important under these circumstances. So how do you propose Apple verifies ownership? The only way Apple has to verify ownership is with a receipt of purchase from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller (perhaps even the first person who registers the product with Apple will also suffice, but I don't know about this).

It is one of the risks when buying a Mac although it would be nice if Apple actually would prominently mention this when a new Mac is purchased since losing the original receipt may result in the same situation for the original owner if the laptop was not registered with Apple.
