Can you partition a disk you're using for Time Machine backups?

You can, but it's not a good idea to for a couple of reasons.

  1. It could cramp up and bork your Time Machine backups.
  2. If and when the drive fails, then you loose everything on it.

I suggest getting a second external drive and using it for extra storage, a clone or whatever, instead of putting a second partition on your Time Machine backup drive.
