Hi, I'm getting an apple pencil 1st gen but I just found it doesn't work on my iPad Air - is there any way I can swap this for the 2nd generation in the apple store?

Is the iPad Air you wish to use it with the one in your footnote...? Have you checked to see if it's compatible with Apple Pencil at all...? How old is it...? The second generation Pencil is ONLY compatible with the 4th and 5th generation iPad Air (that is 2020 and 2022), if your iPad is older than that it won't work. See this link: Apple Pencil - Apple
The first generation Pencil is compatible with the 3rd generation Air (2019).
I hated the first generation Pencil; I actually replaced my iPad just so I could use the second. I am so much more productive now I can just store it on the side of my iPad. The only irritation is that it does limit where I can charge it so that I don't need to remove the pencil (there must be a reason why there's only a charging dock on one side).
As someone with poor dexterity due to fibromyalgia, I also hated that the first generation was round and shiny, the second is matte and shaped more like a regular pencil, making it far more comfortable. I had to buy something akin to one of those rubber prismatic pencil grippers teachers put on kids' pencils when they're learning to write.
You can try; usually you can just return it within 14 days for a full refund and buy the one you need.
Can I exchange the 1st gen Apple Pencil for the 2nd gen?
