Tag colors in Ventura have changed for the worse

Mac OS (e.g. Big Sur and prior) used to have these brilliant Tag colors to label files and folders. It seems Ventura changed the Tag colors to be dark and muted. The choices now seem to be between a Red, an Orange and a Yellow that look identical and are closer to Brown; a dark Blue and a dark Green that are difficult to distinguish and a Grey that is closer to Black. I use the tag colors a lot, and it is now difficult to tell tags from one another.

Is there any way to change the tag colors in Ventura short of reverting back to a prior OS?

I found the problem re why the Finder Tag colors were too dark. Somehow this new Mac had System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Increase contrast > set to ON. It turns out that when this Accessibility feature is set to Increase contrast the tag colors go darker and have a brownish tone to them. Switching Increase contrast OFF returns the bright colors :-)

This is what my tags look like on a 2017 5K iMac with Ventura and with Increased Contrast and Reduce Transparency enabled in the Dark Mode and the display set to the SRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile:

In case you have some 3rd party software that might be interfering with the rendering of the colors try the following: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Very nice colors you have there dialabrain - wish I could say the same.

My tag colors whether seen with the MacBook M2 Pro’s Retina XDR display, an Apple Cinema display and an LG Ultrafine 4K display always have the same dark and brownish tone to them.

I wonder if there is a color standardizing method to determine if there’s something wrong with my new MacBook?

I duplicated your settings and the colors were correct...until I disabled Dark Mode. So, for correct colors to display you need to have either Settings >Accessibility >Display >Increase Contrast = OFF, or Increase Contrast = ON *AND* Dark Mode = ON.

BTW, this seems to affect only file Tag and Apple Mail message Flag colors, which I use a lot.

Apple Help says: "Increase Contrast - Increase the contrast of items on the screen (such as borders around buttons or boxes) without changing the contrast of the screen itself."

It appears Apple lumps Tags and Flags into the same 'object type' as "borders around buttons and boxes" and treats them the same. They should operate separately on these object's display colors.

I'd definitely call it an MacOS "bug", certainly not a desirable "feature." I want Increased Contrast (no Dark Mode), but with the correct colors still displayed. From the other various posts, other users do too.
