I am trying to connect two desktop macs
Mac OS BigSur 11.2.3
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
and
Mac OS BigSur 11.7.4
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
with a thunderbolt 2 cable
not having any success

For Target Display mode the source Mac needs to be 2019 or earlier running Catalina or earlier.
The target iMac needs to be mid 2014 or earlier and needs to be running High Sierra or earlier.
Your Late 2014 5K iMac is not supported for this in any way.
Yes, you could make a bootable macOS drive to boot one of the Macs into Catalina to be the source Mac, but the other Mac would still not be supported as a display target.

make one computer a secondary display. Any other way beside using target display in os version Catalina or earlier? would this have to be the same os for both computers?
