MacBook Air Desktop Folder No Longer Open when Double Clicking. How do I fix this? Problem is not click speed.

My MacBook Air always permitted Desktop folders to be opened by double clicking the icon. For some reason this capability stopped working and I must go to File>Open on the tool bar. Can someone tell me how to return to opening filed by double clicking on the Desktop Icon?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15
