Can I use any monitor with the mini?

I have been using an iMac for over 8 years and it has become frustratingly slow. I have over 10 gig of free space and over 8 gigs of free memory. I believe it is time for a new machine. The new iMac has a 24" screen, which is larger than I want. In keeping with the Apple Universe, can I go to a mini and use say, an LG monitor? Or would a laptop be the way to go (I am on my machine an average of 8 hours daily), with a 15 or 16" display?

Certainly, you can use an Apple Mac Mini with a monitor from another brand, such as LG. The Mac Mini features various ports, including HDMI and USB-C/Thunderbolt, that allow for easy connection to most modern displays. The main considerations are to make sure that:

1. The monitor has compatible ports or that you have the necessary adaptors or cables.

2. The monitor supports the resolution and other features you may need for your workflow.

Switching to a Mac Mini with an external monitor can provide you with more flexibility in your setup and could be more cost-effective than purchasing a new iMac, especially if you already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Alternatively, if you're considering a laptop, a MacBook Pro with a 15 or 16-inch display can be a good choice. They are powerful machines and offer the added benefit of portability. You can also hook up an external monitor to a MacBook Pro when you're at your desk, giving you the best of both worlds.

So both options are viable; it mainly depends on whether you require portability or not.

10 GB f free space is not enough, you need 30GB to 50GB minimum.

These days, 21.5" – 24" monitors are about as small as it gets for desktop monitors.

If you want something smaller than that, you might need to look into something more specialized. E.g., one of the portable monitors shown on the B&H Photo Video and Adorama sites. Note that depending on the montitor's size and resolution, text could be very small and hard to read.
