Screentime request not triggering notification on parent device.

When my child makes a request for more time, he uses an iPad 9 running iPad OS 17.x.

My iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 17.x does not notify me. If I navigate to settings>screentime>child, I can see the pending request. But why don’t I get a notification?

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 17

Hi Pho Da Nguyen,

Thanks for providing those details. Let's also make sure that you have banners enabled for notifications as well. You can verify this by going to Settings > Notifications > Screen Time > Banners. You can also see more about notifications here: Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Regards.

I was able to resolve this. This is due to send requests being sent through iMessage in iOS 17.

You need to make sure your child has iMessage activated on their device with their own email address.

As a parent, you need to make sure you can receive iMessage via your phone number AND the email associated with your Apple ID.

Once that is done, the notifications will show up within iMessage.

After getting frustrated, I actually like this better since you can see the history of requests. I just wish there was better documentation available from Apple.

FYI for anyone finding this. I fixed it, checked both son and my phone were fully up to date. Confirmed iMessage was on for my phone then discovered my son’s phone iMessage on but had his phone number and email checked. I unchecked his email because when I checked his phone his notifications were coming from his text message center but addressed to my email and not coming through. I then on my son’s phone turned I message off then back on and immediately got the same familiar notification on my phone to approve the app! Hope this helps someone, it worked for me.

Hey there Pho Da Nguyen,

We'd like to help by ruling out some basics, along with learning more about what's happening:

  1. When did this start, and are your Screen Time notification settings enabled? You can check those settings in your iPhone under Settings > Notifications > Screen Time.
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone and Restart your iPad
  3. You mentioned both devices are using iOS/iPadOS 17, but the latest version for both would be iOS/iPadOS 17.0.3. You can verify this within each device under Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad

Cheers!
