What entering an all numeric IP address is supposed to do in a Pubic or Hotel Wi-Fi is force a web page access, which the service provider typically intercepts with their login page. Then you can enter your credentials and proceed.

Sometimes the Domain-Name Server access is also denied, but in some cases nothing (no log-in page) appears, and referencing an all-numeric IP address like 1.1.1.1 gets you out of that Rut.

If you have the green light in

System Preferefdnces > Network > Wi-Fi

Launch a browser and enter this easy to remember all-numeric IP address:

1.1.1.1     and press return.

If you get the CloudFlare** splash page, your internet is working, but DNS lookup may not be working.

**CloudFlare is NOT part of the solution, they just own the easiest to remember all-numeric IP Address.

All-numeric IP addresses do not require an "internet Phone number lookup" provided by your DNS service. the numbers shown in system preferences >Network >whatever-interface, e.g., Wi-Fi are the sites that will be asked for lookup.

There are no good:

0.0.0.0

your Routers local IP address, often 192.168.1.1

--------

These are good:

the two numbers your service provider tells you to use

OpenDNS:

208.67.220.220

208.67.222.222

googleDNS, but I hesitate to provide them knowing google sells you searches and web site visits.

There are many more. If none of those work out, just post back.
