Why is Siri unable to play Playlists on iOS 17.5?

Since upgrading to iOS 17.5 a couple of days ago, Siri can no longer play my playlists. I get a reply that says "Looks like Apple Music can't play that.”

This is music and playlists that are in my library that were synced through iTunes from my PC.

I also have an Apple Music subscription but this was not a problem before the 17.5 update.

I deleted all the music from my iPhone and removed the Music app. Then re-synced everything from iTunes. That didn't solve anything. I can't find very many posts on Apple communities or Reddit. I can't possibly be the only one experiencing this.

Anyone else going through this? Any solutions or suggestions? It's most annoying in the car because I can't ask Siri to launch a playlist anymore.

I’m having the same exact problem. I love listening to my playlists in the car, and have resorted to manually starting the playlist before driving. It’s very annoying.

Yup, no access to music playlists through Siri, as a motorcyclist this is a function I use several times a day. I wouldn't be so irritated if it weren't for the fact that this exact same issue happens a year or so ago, it was fixed with an update and then reoccured just recently from a recent update. Can't believe they've allowed to happen again.

Latest failures: I installed 17.7 today 9/17/2024. No luck resolving our 4 month frustration in which Siri will not play or shuffle playlists in My Library when connected to CarPlay.

Now, I just installed iOS 18. I was hopeful that the engineers would have rectified our issue. Another failure.

Certainly the engineers have known about this ever since our problem surfaced after the release of iOS 17.5 in May. I submitted a video capture and a time stamp documenting thus Siri failure to engineers via my technician. That was on 8/6/2024.

What recourse do we have? Who in a position of power is even aware of this?

Finally, does anyone at Apple really care?

And still we are driving our vehicles distracted by a basic Siri failure.

Who can/will help us?

The latest: Technician Reuben called me this morning and also sent a corresponding email. Our issue has been further “escalated” but still no solution. From the email:

“Thanks for your patience. I received an update about your case. According to our escalations team on your behalf, a bug report has been filed for further review of the issue. This process could take days, weeks or even months before another response is received.

The advice from our escalations team is for you to ensure that you keep your iPhone 15 Pro software update, as the response from engineering can come as additional troubleshooting steps to complete, a software update or a new article with instructions on how to proceed to resolve the Siri unexpected behavior.”

I wish I could be sharing a definitive fix, but it looks like it could take a while.

Same issue and several calls later and engineering is reviewing. I haver restored the iPhone 12PM 3 times, including on a mac and an old saved backup, but issue persists with iOS17.5. Per my tech, thay have everything they need to work the problem, but I'm told that I should keep an eye open for an update, and they'll reach back out to me as soon as an update is available.

I could perhaps be a little more patient if this were the first time this Siri and Playlist bug occurred, and Apple was working feverishly to correct it.

But the same thing happened to the Music App and Siri the last time there was a software update. And it took months to fix it.

It is farcical that Apple expects us to update our software every time there is an update available, yet the updates seem to break things that previously worked perfectly.

I just installed IOS 18 and no change to the issue. I presume Apple will only allow the CarPlay Siri playlist feature if you subscribe to Apple Music. It is sad how far Apple has fallen since the days of the highest customer satisfaction and focus. It no longer differentiates itself from other tech companies. I use an iPhone 13, but I will not be upgrading the hardware again until this feature is fixed. I am drawing the line.

Same here. It seems, the problem started right after updating to 17.5. Extremely frustrating. I rely on Siri commands to play/shuffle my playlists using CarPlay in addition to other scenarios. “Looks like Apple Music can’t play that” is always the reply.

I get the sense that Apple Music is somehow interfering with My Library. For example, I asked Siri to “Play (artist) in My Library.” It was a mishmash of songs by the (artist) in my My Library, immediately followed by the same song in Apple Music. (Won’t bore you with details on how I can tell the different sources.)

I have progressed with Apple Support from Representative, to Technician Reuben, who has been super reliable, and who is now communicating with Apple engineers. I have received several callbacks.

Again, extremely frustrating. But they are very much aware of the problem.

Same issue here. Siri and personal libraries are so unreliable and untested and buggy — have had many similar issues in the past, now struggling with this.

Not holding my breath for resolution, it can takes 6 months or a year to get a fix even after doing advanced logging and escalation with customer support.

I am specifically getting this issue with CarPlay, but I can get music to play from my Apple Watch when connected to CarPlay.

Just received a so-called “update” from Apple (June 28). Another email, closely parroting what was written one month ago. Compare Apple’s latest response (below) to what I received on May 27 (elsewhere in this discussion):

“Thanks for contacting us.  I received your email. So far I there hasn’t been been any further updates about your case. Per the advice of our escalations team. This case has been filed as a bug report for further review. This process could take days, weeks or even months before another response is received.”

The advice from our escalations team is for you to ensure that you keep your iPhone 15 Pro software up to date. As the response from engineering can come as additional troubleshooting steps to complete, a software update or a new article with instructions on how to proceed to resolve the Siri unexpected behavior.”

Meanwhile, we have compromised iPhones that can’t perform hands-free functions that are important to us while driving and in other scenarios.

Still waiting …
