I get a pop-up window asking "Do you want to download "occ" in my Safari browser

Just happened to me as well. I was on DeadlineHollywood.com and it popped up. I x’d out of it, but I hate when prompts like that pop up because it usually means the bug is already on your phone. Do we know this is for sure related to the updated iOS, which I downloaded 3 days ago.

I’ve noticed it seems to happen on websites that have video that auto plays, which most news sites seem to have.

I also had a pop-up that instead of “occ”, it was “sync”.

I thought it might have something to do with the update to iOS 18 since I wasn’t having the issue prior to updating.

I’ve seen this pop up a couple of times on Safari, running 17.7. Both related to browsing major news sites.

I don’t believe I downloaded the file when I closed the popup. I’m still concerned.

Can someone confirm that the single location downloads from Safari go on iPhone is to Files?

(I’ve checked Files and don’t see any new downloads.)

I’m getting this all the time in Safari and I just updated to iOS 17.7 on my iPad Pro, so it’s not just limited to iOS 18 users. (That’s probably already been mentioned, but I didn’t take the time to read every message.)

Happens on NBC, CNN, ESPN, etc.

Me too on iPad…running 17.7 and it’s been happening

for about a week now. Pops up on some news sites and almost always with ESPN. For two weeks prior I got a different one on ESPN, so I’m wondering if that’s related somehow.

I got these popups for a few days on chrome using an older iPhone running the latest version of ios15. After I restarted my iPhone and Wi-Fi at the same time these pop-ups have completely stopped. It’s been two days now. Has anyone else had success with this method?

As others have reported here, it also happens on iOS 17 and even older versions such as iOS 16.5 that have not been updated. Since Ad blockers seem to stop it, the issue appears to be a problem originating from a specific Ad network. The big 3 are Google, Facebook, and Amazon. I suspect that the problem ad will be identified by the Ad service and will be removed and it will go away just as fast as it appeared.

This is what I've been repeatedly getting (iPhone 8Plus running 16.7.10 - don't laugh). I get it in Safari when I open Wordle (NYT) and a local TV news station's site. It also happens in the Reddit app when I try to open articles in the news feed. I have never seen the "occ" message, though.

I have been getting it for the past week. Yesterday I got the message when I was in my local TV channel page. It MAY have started when I updated to 17.6.1 last weekend.

I’ve not gone to 18 yet as I read some horror stories and will wait until they sort those out b4 going to 18.0.

in all the years I’ve been on Apple (iPhone3) I’ve never seen anything like this “occ”. Apple’s strength has been keeping those out. I still can’t see where to report it and that’s probably why many, many others have not as well.

I'm using an older iPhone (SE, but the second version) and iOS 17.4.1. I tend to keep things as they are - minimum upgrades - until I have to make a change. Most recent update to 17.4.1 was probably a few weeks ago (required by my bank's mobile app).

The "download occ" popup started for me on Sept 19, 2014 (two days ago), using Safari. I didn't X anything, just backed out of that page. It reoccurred multiple times: nerves and stress. I re-booted my router and phone, went to MSNBC, clicked on one headline, started to read a little bit, and got the prompt again.

I'm generally extremely careful about my clicking; if I get somewhere I shouldn't be, it's usually a finger-touch error. Mostly use my phone browser for news, word games, plant id and research. I'm reluctant to download or install anything - including ad blockers. Not sure why, but no prompts since late last night, knock on wood! Just adding my specs for stats even though I don't think they reflect anything new.

Thank you for your post! While we don't have to believe that Apple is perfect and never makes mistakes, we also don't need to blame Apple for everything that we encounter using our devices. I do believe Apple can mitigate this popup with a point update to the OS even if it is caused by a third party service, but that will take time as they first need to determine what caused it and then need to test the update before releasing it to make sure the fix does not break something else. It is also possible that a third party ad service will identify the problem themselves and quietly fix it without any comment. Time will tell and hopefully we will see an explanation, otherwise it just leads to speculation that serves no purpose.

No I’m still getting “do you want to “download” and “Canada committee” for one website I use. I spoke to Apple support and they said they would research it and call me back “in a few minutes” but they didn’t.

Well, I thought installing Adguard solved it for me. But, it’s back this morning, and this message showed up when I logged into my bank account:

Do you want to download “_codexch”?

I X’d it out, but I assume Apple is unable to help at all.
