I get a pop-up window asking "Do you want to download "occ" in my Safari browser

Until a few days ago I never would have worried that mistakenly downloading something like this might actually blow up my phone.

We are having the same pop up. It’s not from the update of the iOS though. We have not yet updated and have older devices. I tried clearing the browser history and it still pops up. Mine was on usatoday, my husbands on espn.

I was having the same OCC issue. popping up multiple times. Mainly on news sites.

I cleared my website data, restarted my iPhone and it seems to have fixed the issue.

Running iOS 17.7 on iPhone 15.

Hmmm, Apple Support has removed my post. They seem pretty responsive in protecting their brand. But when it comes to protecting us or simply keeping us updated, not so much. Welp!

I accidentally downloaded it while swiping the screen on a news website. Empty file called Sync. Does anyone have any recommendations if this is Malware??

I have been experiencing the same in the past 24 hours. My iOS was 17.6.1 . I subsequently updated to 17.7 and immediately to 18. Prior to updates, I deleted my web history and cookies several times and it didn’t work. I suspected by trial and error that when I was on APNews & scrolled to any ads that was served by Taboola, it triggered the pop ups. I blocked Taboola by adjusting the settings at parental restrictions. So far, I haven’t experienced any popups

I also keep getting “Do you want to download Sync?”

Hey! I totally understand your concern about that pop-up. It can be really frustrating when unexpected messages show up, especially after an update. Ive got it 2 times tonight. Did a screen grab the second time.

Ditto. Just started happening. I’ve done a full shutdown restart of the phone (twice now) When it popped up again on a different site, I looked into it and the only returns I see are from others asking in Apple support about it. iOS 18 on iPhone 15 pro max.

I thought I’d share that I’m now getting the same download on Firefox for iPadOS 18. The difference here is that Firefox gives you slightly more information. It shows the download as coming from ups.analytics.yahoo.com.

I hope this is another piece of the puzzle.

The occ download message has been popping up for about a month. Ive ignored it the whole time. I got re-interested in it when I had message to download sys the other day.

It tends to pop up in “news” sites. I think it’s linked to one or more advertisements.

I spoke to Sean (Shawn?), a helpful Apple Support rep yesterday. He said it sounds like an ad-related issue (as has been postulated here). He confirmed it's a zero-byte download, can't hurt if we downloaded it previously, by mistake or otherwise. He advised not downloading, either by "X"ing out or backing out of the page and then closing it (my preferred method, as I'm super-suspicious of even clicking the prompt's "X").

He also advised contacting the web site(s) where we see it, to advise them of the problem so that it gets fixed.

Personally, I haven't had this issue for the past almost two days, so I think web site admins and/or ad folks have figured out it's a problem and now have - or are getting - a handle on this scary thing.

This just started for me tonight too after updating to 17.7. I’m on an iPad Air M2.
