I get a pop-up window asking "Do you want to download "occ" in my Safari browser

Thought it was just me. Happens multiple times a day. Yes. Tried all the normal things to clear it. Nothing has worked.

Same here, it’s been happening for the past several days on my iPhone 15. Never happened before. I hate it, as I’m not used to getting phishing pop ups on safari.

iPhone SE 2020 with iOS 17.6.1 and Safari browser:

I am getting the “Do you want to download ‘occ’” popup very frequently on ALL of the major news websites (ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, etc.)

The popup does NOT occur on normal, non-news-related websites.

Your previous post included a link to your own x post and directing users to it for self promotion. That is a clear violation of the Terms of Use. It is less about Apple protecting their brand and more about Apple not promoting yours.

I have seen one user that has contacted Apple and has an appointment with an Engineer today, so we will see what the outcome is. It may require an update to iOS or may be a problem with an external product such as the Wordpress hack that compromised many news websites earlier this year. There is no doubt it will be addressed and luckily you have an iOS device where Malware will not be able to be installed on the System even with the download button. Other device manufacturers may not be so lucky or even able to identify it. Stay tuned!

This support site is made up of users just like you. Apple is not here to advise you, but if you want to talk to them directly, you can use the link here. After that is done, I am sure a user here will provide some insight into the solution, but until that happens, we can only speculate as it has been reported that this commonly happens on news sites.

As you can see, it is currently happening on multiple versions of the OS, not specific to iOS 18. Users have also posted:

• Happens most frequently on news sites
• Happens using Chrome as well
• Some reported blocking Taboola ads using screen time restrictions worked
• Some reported using Ad Blocker worked

We will have to wait for a solution or at least what the website is wanting you to download. The good news is that an executable file cannot be downloaded to an iOS device, so even if it is Malware, it will not run.

Double check your Safari Settings, my "Block Pop Ups" Button was set to Off - also recently updated IOS so that might have something to do with it.

I’ve been having this for the last week. Updating the iOS and clearing history, etc haven’t made a difference. Mine is usually in espn.com

Had a chat with Apple tech who told me it’s not an Apple problem. It’s an ad from one of my installed apps. Told me to download an ad blocker from the App Store. Could not tell me any particular one.

Here is the solution:

[1] Download the “AdGuard” iOS app

[2] Navigate to: Settings —> Safari —> Extensions

[3] Turn on ALL seven of the AdGuard extensions

[4] Problem Solved :)

I noticed that it has been several days since I have received the message as well.

I cleared my history and website data and I stopped getting the pop up. I was also getting a black pop up screen on my iPad telling me to rotate my screen. This too stopped occurring after I cleared the history and website data.

For me, the "download occ" message started AFTER the update to iOS 18 on a 13 Pro. Never saw it before and I read the news across multiple sites daily on iPhone. I make it a habit not to click on anything but the articles.

The only change before and after was the update. Would be nice if the IT folks could track this down to its source.

Out of all the posts here, I have only seen 2 people that have actually reported it to Apple using the link that was provided. You would be wrong to think that your post here is being reported to Apple.
