iCloud Drive is re-uploading everything for no apparent reason

It has happened to me a few times now that iCloud suddenly re-uploads the whole desktop (200GB), and I can’t do anything for 4 – 5 full days until the upload process is complete, because else the whole upload process starts from the beginning.

It happens with a chance of 20% when I make an iOS build with Unity and then open it with Xcode – even if the build file is in a .nosync folder.

I am thankful for any help, as this is extremely frustrating.

I'm not sure I get what's happening. iCloud Drive is a folder on your Mac. If you see Desktop there, then you are seeing the Desktop folder on your Mac. Including Desktop in syncing with iCloud just puts the Desktop folder in the iCloud Drive folder instead of in your User folder. Otherwise, it's the same.

Things in your iCloud Drive are copied to iCloud.com where you can see them and use them from the browser. If you have other devices connected to iCloud, then the contents of iCloud Drive can be seen and used on those other machines, as well. But, the Desktop folder is local to you. This applies to anything you put in the iCloud Drive folder.

If you have "Optimize Mac Storage" turned on, then when your Mac's hard drive gets really full, some lesser used files will be removed to make room. When you need one of those removed files, the Mac will grab the copy at iCloud.com and copy it to your Mac where it will again become a local file. You always use local files. This should all happen transparently.

Are you using "Optimize?" What percentage of your internal hard drive is free?

Perhaps the biggest downside of "Optimize" is that backups may not include all your files. I don't do "Optimize" on my Mac, though I use it on my iPhone which has way less storage. To keep the room I need on my MacBook, I put stuff on a tiny (like 1 ounce) SSD that I carry around. I try to keep 20% of my internal drive free.

So, I don't see what you mean by "iCloud suddenly re-uploads the whole desktop…and I can’t do anything for 4 – 5 full days…." The files you use aren't "uploading;" they're right there on the Mac.

Can you clarify what you mean?

That’s right, the full Desktop folder is part of the iCloud. When the problem appears, not only the desktop is being re-uploaded, but every other file in the iCloud as well, but I don’t have many files in the other iCloud folders.

Optimize is turned off, and I have 300 of 1000 GB free space on the hard drive.

When I say "re-uploading", I mean that all files on the Mac get the upload icon (arrow up with the file size beneath it). When I press on the iCloud syncing info, it takes roughly 3 days of "Preparing files to upload", while it counts up to ~500.000 (the number of files on my Mac), and then it takes another day to count back to zero, and then it is finished. I am not sure if it actually uploads anything, the files haven’t changed after all. And when I say I can’t do anything, it means that I can’t drag files somewhere else (it does work with the Terminal) and if I change or add a file, it starts with the whole process again.

When you say "the full Desktop folder is part of the iCloud," do you mean iCloud Drive? Are you saying that your entire user folder has been moved to the iCloud Drive folder on your Mac? I'm confused by your use of "iCloud," which is different from iCloud Drive or iCloud Photos or iCloud Mail, etc.

I'm thinking that I would turn off wifi and see what works and what doesn't.
