two issues with my iPhone 16 pro max IOS 18:
1) keyboard lacks of responsiveness, oftentimes I have to double click when typing or It misses letters.
2) when searching for apps or contacts and using the swipe down function if starting a word with the letter «s», the search immediately disappears and spotlight shuts down.
what to do? Do I have a faulty device or is this an OS issue?

Your issues may relate to iOS 18 software glitches. For the keyboard lag, try resetting keyboard settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary). The "S" search bug is likely a Spotlight indexing error—restart the device or reinstall iOS via Recovery Mode. If problems persist after updating to iOS 18.1 (released October 2024), contact Apple Support for hardware diagnostics.
Try disabling the predictive text in the keyboard settings. That made a HUGE improvement for me.
One thing you might try is to enable extended predictions under dwell control and set it to 0.25 ms this has helped me a bit. Though there isn’t a direct relation for this settings to typing experience and I’m not sure could be bug but I have been trying things while waiting for the fix and found out this has improved the spacebar and backspace tabs feel less choppy , hope this helps.
There is an update coming in like a day or 2 I believe. There is also one more thing you can try that I have not. If you have a Mac pc or laptop you can plug your phone in and back it up on the pc, and then restore (basically erase everything on your phone, but can be retrieved from the back up) and re-update the iOS update and set up your phone once more, but I don’t know if that will even work.. my mom has no issues with her iPhone 16, but she also didn’t get the Max. Apparently the iphone 16, and 16 pro had keyboard issues from the start and they sent out an update to correct that issue. Now the pro max, which is what we have, is having that issue. You can wait for the update like me and hope it fixes this issue, which by now Apple has to be aware of.. iPhone 16 isn’t all that great anyway like I thought it’d be tbh.. but my iPhone 12 Pro Max was completely malfunctioning so I’m stuck lol. You gotta choice at least lol.
Been experiencing the same issues with the iphone 16 I just got and from the looks of this forum Apple still have not done anything about it.
So I've resorted to redownloading my Google gboard app which I haven't used in years because at least that works the way I'm used to.
Hear that Apple? I'm left with no choice but to use a keyboard from Google your top competitor because the keyboard on your own iOS is so dysfunctional...
For your issue #1 re lack of responsiveness try the solution given in earlier comments. Goto Settings then Accessibility then Touch then Assistive Touch. Make sure this is on. This seems to help.
There are other touch-related settings on this page. It might help to check these out.
I’ve tried the MS keyboard a few different times, but I just can’t get used to it. I’m constantly tapping on the globe since my muscle memory tells me that is where my emojis are.
I just tried disabling predictive text today and that has surprisingly made a huge improvement. This is probably the best I’m going to get.
Everyone should definitely submit feedback through here, to get a resolution processed faster.
I have the same issue and it improved a little, after turning off the swipe feature of the keyboard. But not it’s still not as responsive as the iPhone 14 :(
Disable haptic touch for keyboard and restart it will solve it
Settings>accessibility>keyboards&typing>key repeat to off position.

Hello everyone. I've been using an iPhone 16 Pro Max for 4 days. I have the same issue with the keyboard. At first, I thought it was a problem with the glass, so I replaced it with an original one. Then I thought it was the case causing the issue. I reset the keyboard, and then I reset the phone to factory settings. I'm typing sentences with hundreds of mistakes; it reacts extremely slowly, it's so frustrating! I'm already losing my patience... I had the 16 Pro Max; I used the 13 Pro Max for 3 years and could type at lightning speed. I really hope this issue gets resolved soon, because I’d rather not have to go to service, as it would cost not €300-€500, but €1500.
Here is proof that there is obviously a problem with the keyboard as I did a typing test.
Results were the following:
iPhone 16 Pro Max: 32WPM 174CPM (Top 70%)
iPhone 14 Pro Max: 57WPM 309CPM (Top 20%)

I am experiencing the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. I just made a genius bar appt as I can’t live with this piece of junk of one more minute!!! I don’t care if I have to get a different device, this is totally unusable.
