Upgrading macOS while preserving data using a physical backup

I have a IMac from mid 2010 that is currently running macOS 10.13 high sierra, I have a external drive that has a physical backup of my Mac, I want to install a newer macOS on it but I’m worried if my stuff will get erased once I get a newer macOS on it and if it does could I use my physical backup to rest or everything including the macOS version.

A iMac from mid 2010 cannot run any OS greater than 10.13. You are already maxed.

I would add that if a disk is used for backup, it should not be used for any other purpose. Get another disk if you wish to install an OS on it. And I would strongly suggest only using an SSD for that. Mechanical disks are much slower.
